' The Wigton School '  

Collection

I will be showing on this website a collection of interesting early Wigton clocks that all have various religious ('memento mori') verses to their dials. They are all connected in some way to the 'Wigton School of Clockmaker's' headed by John Sanderson of Wigton from the early 1690s. The collection include examples by John Sanderson, John Ismay, Richard Sill, Joseph Calvert, Joseph Shepperton and Redge Buckle. I believe that these early religious Wigton clocks were originally made for and sold to the quakers and non- conformist's of the region, since  Wigton had become a major settlement for quakers at that time and Sanderson must have had plenty of quaker customers. In 1653, the Founder of the Quakers, George Fox visited Tiffenthaite farm in Wigton where he met with..........................
